"Upper reaches of the Amazon," by Joseph Froude Woodroffe, was published in London by Methuen & Co., in 1914. It is quite an adventure story, told with details by a gifted writer. After the firm he was working for went bankrupt, Joseph Woodroffe stayed for another eight years--not always by choice--in the upper Amazon River basin, where rubber was king and debt-servitude, or outright slavery, was the rule for rubber tappers. While some details are self-serving and not easily believed (such as his sitting next to Sir Roger Casement on a steamer a few pages after Casement had been mentioned in another context), the story is, on the whole, sound and coherent. We have few reports of the atrocities committed in the struggle for rubber in the upper Amazon, and we have to appreciate those that exist. "Jungle," by Ferreira Castro, is another example that comes to mind. "Black Gold," by Jungmann is another. A good history of the Amazon rubber boom is "The Struggle for Rubber in Brazil," by Warren Dean, as is Barbara Weinstein's doctoral thesis, "The Amazon Rubber Boom, 1850-1920." Woodroffe gives us a first-hand account, and one wonders just what he is hiding behind all his glib words. Was he really different from the cruel planters and overseers he deplores?
