I had heard of Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) but really was not too familiar with what it would do. This dystopian novel was informative and fast paced. It starts off quickly and continues at a pretty fast pace throughout.

As the main character is crossing a bridge into New Jersey early one July 4th weekend with a load of meat in his truck for the neighborhood picnic, suddenly his truck stops. He soon realizes that all the vehicles have stopped. He's faster on the uptake than many others in realizing that no one is coming to help so, with a small group, gets off the bridge and to his home a few miles away. Thus, the ending of society as we know it.

Banding together with a few others in the neighborhood, this group forms a collective to help each other both for resources and protection. Of course there is the inevitable bully and band of outlaws. And an even bigger band of people who plan to move out of the area.

I enjoyed seeing how the families coped with scarcity of materials, food, etc. However, I thought they were really slow on the uptake for taking care of their needs. It's weeks before anyone even thinks of building an outhouse or latrine. Really? Or creating cisterns or some kind of water collection system from rain water through the house gutters. And no where does anyone plant a garden. This was summer in New Jersey and there would still be several months growing season. Surely someone in the whole neighborhood would have a garden already.

However, I did enjoy the book. Has some typos in the digital version but overall, can't wait to read the next installment. What would I do under similar circumstances? What would you do? How long could you survive?

I was only give the book 3 or 4 stars when I got nearly half way through. It really came all together at the end. I did have a question how Roethke came into the Matt's sphere towards the end of the book. It was good enough that I could overlook that. I believe I got a free copy of the book a year or two ago. Now I have to buy the next book. Yes it was that good.
This was inexpensive, so I wasn't expecting much, still, I can only give 2 stars. It started out slow, dragged in the middle (I almost had to stop reading) and then only picks up a little in the end. I have to agree with another comment which said that that the people don't seem worth of making it. I cringed when the characters started to go away from their vehicles after the EMP, without thinking about taking anything useful, like food or drink with them. Also they never seem to think about capturing rain water, until very late in the book.
I would recommend this book because it gives a realistic set of responses people are likely to have when an EMP happens. Nobody will respond flawlessly, the prepared just ahead of others. This book does a good job of showing what not to do in a neighborhood situation as much as it shows what to do and lessons can be learned from both! Good writing, occasional typos...but I'm a tech editor so I tend to see flaws other people miss. Look forward to the next installment!
This book was different. The people in the subdivision weren't 'preppers', nor even halfway prepared mentally for what they were facing. I believe most people would fall apart when faced with something like an EMP. The flip side of human but basically good, is the predators who would crawl out of the woodwork. Some of them would be cowardly 'followers'. The worst would be the psychopaths who have no conscience and who would do anything! The terrors that those people could unleash would happen in a very short period of time.

There's a radical turn in the story that takes it (and obviously a follow-up book) in a totally different direction. You'll need to read it!
This well-written book has a complex plot and believable characters. I read it in two sessions and was very sorry when I finished it. I can't wait to see how the plot develops in the next book and what happens to the characters I became involved with while reading the first book of the series.
I liked that unlike most SHTF books, the main characters are pretty clueless, not hero's, not "Rambo's", have plenty of flaws and have way too much "normalcy bias".
The main characters often want to do the wrong thing, at the wrong time, for the situation. That said, they do figure some things out, but mainly they are just lucky. In other words, the main characters are like 95 % + of regular people, that go about their daily lives everyday, not Preppers, trained fighters or Special Forces Operators.
The author does mix up what an EMP, versus a CME, might affect and to what extent, but I felt that was minor to the whole stories theme.
I liked it enough that I bought the 2nd book, which is very much like the 1st book.
The writing was good. I think there is a subtle cultural difference in perspective that comes out in the interactions between characters. I think the differences were reasonable and believable. My perception is, was, right or wrong, that people from the east are more abrasive, curt, confrontational. Perhaps it's an unfair generalization. Perhaps growing up in the SW and around people who might be carrying a gun, interactions seem more polite and circumspect. So, character interactions were sometimes a bit jarring.
I think I liked the relative ignorance of the characters depicted in respect to survival situations. Good device for heightening tension in the story. More for everyone to learn and overcome. But they seemed to learn so slowly. How fast does dysentery and perhaps cholera occur? Infections from small wounds in conjunction with poor hygiene? Digging a simple cathole and putting a bucket over it to keep ones environment from stinking up. Some of this is so simple.
So, pretty good book. Haven't decided if I'm going to continue with the story. Not a real high recommendation.
