...and this first book from Bob Hett is a cracker!I've only been to Chicago once, in 2002, but loved the excitement and atmosphere of being in such an incredibly vibrant city that I had seen in so many movies (I'm an easily pleased Englishman!), and the memories came flooding back in the first few chapters of this book.
Bob's way of writing is honest and gritty, never sparing the reader the adult dialogue and black humour of the day to day life of a police officer. The characters are believable and not the usual clichéd alcoholic cop a week away from pension,
The story crackles along at a great pace, involving the reader in all aspects of a crime from the incident itself, through the police investigation, court case and sentencing.
I had planned on just reading a chapter or two before I went to bed - and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting!
Murder, corruption and lies - the recipe for a perfect crime thriller - and I loved it.
And I'm so glad I found out who and how the river is dyed for St Pats Day!

As a 50 year Chicago resident, I had little trouble translating the characters to real live Chicago personalities. The story was good; the main character was believable. I wish real life could work this way.
I wasn't sure what to expect but from start to finish I was hooked and couldn't put this book down. I read all the time and take pride on my selections. This was a great one.

If you are interested in the details of police work and court proceedings, this is a novel for you. The language is R-rated and straight to the point, as the protagonist (a police officer) works to see that a victim gets justice despite the fact that the perpetrator is well-connected.
Devoured Grisham novels until he lost focus and his subject's swayed away from the courtroom. Banged around with various authors searching for another Grisham type. Some were ok but not "here we go"... and then I read Keegan's Peril. What a terrific story. Hett,s style really keeps you interested, the only problem I had was it was such a fast read and this is only his first title. Maybe the search is over... time will tell. Looking forward to subsequent Bob Hett novels ... but this is an excellent novel.
I really enjoyed this book. I am a very picky reader when it comes to fiction. If it doesn't hook me by the first chapter, I usually move on. I don't have time to waste waiting for the story to unfold or for the writer to set the scene after a few chapters.
This book is a page turner that hooks you right from the beginning. I felt compelled to immerse myself in Jack Keegan's mind - to understand how he thinks and how he sees the world. Since this book is written from the first person perspective you discover the truth of the situation as Jack discovers the truth.
For me it was a journey into what life would be if I lived in Chicago and worked for the police department. It was gritty and real, and made me feel like I was really there. I came away with a glimpse of what the judicial system, politics, policing and being a different person would be like. For that I'm grateful. I recommend this book.
Nobody knows police procedures, viewpoints and problems as well as the police themselves. And what happens when an honest cop runs across a crime committed by the mayor's nephew?
They have their own experiences, slang and voices. And in Chicago, they must operate under a notorious political machine that looks out for its own.
This story of an honest cop using honest reporters to go up against the system reminds me of John Grisham.
The author does need to learn more how to show instead of tell.

Author, Bob Hett, does a fine job of introducing the characters to you and making you feel as though you drink coffee with them, too. His style of writing is real and personable, and I like that. His team is one that I would like being a part of, too.
Good job with "Keegan's Peril". I enjoyed it very much. Five stars!
